In celebration of National Bird Day and the New Year, I couldn’t think of anything better to do this morning than go birding!
I decided to take a little walk around one of my favorite local places in Dayton, Woodman Fen. Now, if you don’t know, fens are a specialized type of wetland (sort of like a bog) and the Dayton area has had lots of rain the last 2 weeks. Soooo… this made for a very muddy and muck-filled walk this morning! That’s ok though, the sun was shining bright and the temps were starting to rise on this beautiful Saturday. It made for some perfect birding weather!
I started off on the wet outer loop trail and was greeted by a very chatty Winter Wren. These guys are always bursting with personality. A little further ahead, the place was teeming with woodpeckers. Flicker, Hairy, Downy, and Red-bellied were all busy, chasing each other round. Lots of chickadees and goldfinches were enjoying the pleasant sunshine. Finally, I took a walk around the boardwalk where a very friendly Swamp Sparrow took interest in me. I’d have to say, this nice encounter with the sparrow was my favorite moment of the day.
Please, let us know what you did for National Bird Day today or what your favorite bird of the day was! We would love to hear all about it and hope everyone enjoyed the day as much as us!
